What a website needs after launch: support, updates and backups
Launch is the beginning. What to do regularly so the site stays fast, secure and keeps bringing in leads.
A website is not a one-off purchase. Like an office, it needs care: content goes stale, technology updates and security threats appear all the time.
What support includes
- Backups — regular copies of the site and database stored apart from the server, and a check that they can actually be restored
- Updates — the system, libraries and the security certificate (HTTPS)
- Monitoring — an alert that the site is down before customers notice
- Security — strong passwords, restricted access to the admin panel, spam protection on forms
- Content — current prices, contacts, news and portfolio
- Analytics — once a month, see where visitors come from and which pages lead to enquiries
How often
Backups and monitoring should run automatically. Updates and a check of incoming enquiries work well monthly, and content as the business changes.
Tip
Before launch, agree who is responsible for hosting, the domain and access credentials, and keep copies yourself. The domain and accounts should be registered to your company.
